Deadline date approaching to file for Senior and Veteran Exemptions
The deadline for property tax exemptions listed below is March 27, 2007. A Legislative Act was passed to expand the Veterans exemption and Veterans motor vehicle excise exemption amounts for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Reimbursement to the town was also increased for these veteran exemptions.
What is an exemption? An exemption releases an individual from the requirement to pay all or a fraction of their property tax obligations. Exemptions are available to those individuals that meet the various requirements in the following categories:
§ Blind
§ Deceased Police or Firefighters killed in the line of duty
§ Disabled Veteran
§ Elderly
§ Minor Children
§ Minor Children with a deceased Parent
§ Widows and/or Widowers
Applications for tax exemptions can be obtained from the Assessor’s office.
Besides Disabled Veterans and the above exemptions the Assessors office also has an elderly and hardship tax deferral program. A tax deferral permits one to defer payment on property taxes. As opposed to an exemption, these deferred taxes must eventually be paid.
Requirements: Age, asset and income limitations, owner occupant and domiciled in placeStateMassachusetts are some of the requirements.
